Applying SPF Across Skin Finishes

Sun protection remains the singular non-negotiable step in any daily routine. Whether you aim for the high-shine, hydrated look of glass skin or the controlled, velvet surface of a matte finish, the mechanical requirement of applying sunscreen does not shift. The difficulty lies in integrating the necessary volume of product without disrupting the aesthetic you intend to achieve.

Achieving uniform coverage while respecting finish preferences requires a systematic approach. You must deposit the equivalent of two full finger-lengths of product on your face, neck, and ears to reach the intended protection level regardless of your final texture.

Cleansing the surface. Begin with a clean, dry surface. If you use a moisturizer or serum, allow it to set until the skin feels firm to the touch. Residual moisture can cause sunscreen to smear or streak, which interferes with a uniform finish.
Measuring the dose. Dispense the sunscreen along the length of your index and middle fingers. This serves as the standard measurement to ensure you are using enough product. Do not attempt to guess the amount.
Dotting the surface. Distribute the measured product across your forehead, cheeks, nose, and chin using small dots. Distributing the product evenly before blending prevents heavy pooling in one area, which is vital for maintaining either a matte or a dewy finish.
Mechanical blending. Use a light, patting motion rather than a heavy rubbing motion. Patting ensures that the product film remains intact rather than being pushed around into fine lines or pores, which preserves the intended surface finish.
Setting the finish. Allow the product to dry undisturbed for several minutes. If you are aiming for glass skin, leave the film as it sets naturally. If you prefer a matte finish, apply a sheer, translucent powder with a light dusting motion to dull the excess shine without disturbing the underlying layer.
