The Precise Order of Daily Product Application
Applying products in the correct order is a matter of physics and chemistry. The general rule relies on the concept of viscosity; products must travel from the lightest, most water-soluble consistencies to the heaviest, oil-based formulations. This ensures that lighter molecules can penetrate the surface layer without being blocked by heavier occlusives.
Ignoring this order results in product pilling and diminished efficacy. Follow this hierarchy to ensure each layer serves its intended purpose.
- Cleanse the surface. Begin with a clean canvas to remove residue from the previous cycle. Use a gentle cleanser suited to your skin type. Pat the face dry with a clean towel, leaving the skin slightly damp for the next phase. Excess water on the skin will dilute subsequent applications.
- Apply aqueous toners or essences. Apply water-based toners or essences directly to the skin using clean palms. Pat the liquid into the face until fully absorbed. These products have the lowest molecular weight and require direct contact with the skin to function properly.
- Distribute serums. Apply your chosen serum by dabbing small dots across the forehead, cheeks, and chin. Gently smooth the product outward until it disappears into the skin. Serums contain active ingredients that perform best when they are the first thick substance applied to the skin.
- Seal with moisturizer. Apply a cream or lotion to lock in the hydration provided by previous steps. This layer acts as a physical barrier to prevent transepidermal water loss. Massage in upward, circular motions until the product is completely absorbed.
- Apply final protection. If performing this routine in the morning, finish with an SPF layer. Sun protection must always be the final step to ensure the integrity of the filter is not compromised by underlying products. Allow the layer to set for two minutes before proceeding with any further tasks.
Thin liquids first, heavy creams last. The order is determined by viscosity.
