Moisturiser at 60 seconds: the window test
Application of moisturiser is often performed as an automated task. However, the first sixty seconds following application provide a precise window into your skin's current absorption capacity. This brief testing period allows you to distinguish between product sitting on the surface and hydration actually integrating into the outer layers.
The window test requires no extra equipment beyond your fingers and a steady clock. It serves as a diagnostic tool for understanding your product usage and environmental hydration levels.
- Apply to dampened skin. Begin by applying a dime-sized amount of your standard moisturiser to skin that is slightly damp from washing. Do not rub the product in aggressively. Use broad, sweeping motions to distribute it evenly across your cheeks, forehead, and chin.
- Wait for the settling phase. Stop all movement immediately after distribution. Allow the formula to settle for ten seconds without further manipulation. This interval is critical for the initial water evaporation from the skin's surface.
- Perform the tap test. Using the pads of your index and middle fingers, perform a light tapping motion across the skin. Do not slide your fingers. You are testing for tackiness versus a smooth, velvet-like texture at this midpoint.
- Final evaluation. Assess the remaining sensation on your fingertips. If the fingers lift away easily without resistance, the product has adequately integrated. If a sticky film remains, the formula is likely too heavy or applied in excess for the current environment.
Sixty seconds is the exact duration required to separate true absorption from superficial residue.
