Damp Layering: A Protocol for Dry Skin

Dry skin often suffers from a compromised barrier, leading to rapid transepidermal water loss. The method of damp layering serves to trap external moisture into the upper strata of the epidermis before it can evaporate. This practice requires intentional timing rather than the application of additional products.

By manipulating the environment of the skin surface, you create a more receptive canvas for your existing emollients. This is not about the specific brand of your cream, but the mechanical process of application.

  1. Cleanse and stop. Cleanse your skin as per your preference. Do not reach for a towel immediately. The objective is to retain as much water as possible on the surface of your face. Stop your process while the skin still feels visibly wet to the touch.
  2. Apply serum to damp skin. While the skin remains glistening, dispense your serum. Apply it with flat palms rather than fingertips to cover more surface area. The moisture will act as a lubricant, allowing for even distribution without dragging the skin.
  3. Seal with an occlusive or emollient. Immediately follow the serum with your moisturizer. The objective here is to form a thin physical barrier that locks the trapped water and serum beneath it. If the skin feels tacky, you have successfully maintained the dampness.
  4. The static rest. Wait two minutes before proceeding to any further steps, such as sun protection or base makeup. This pause allows the emulsion to set and ensures the moisture is locked in. Avoid touching your face during this period to prevent mechanical removal.
Moisture is a vehicle, not a destination. Use it to carry your products deeper.
