A Guide to Deep Conditioning Curly Hair

Curly hair has a structure that makes it difficult for natural scalp oils to travel down the hair shaft. This leads to dryness, which manifests as reduced elasticity and a loss of curl definition. Deep conditioning is the process of using a concentrated formula to penetrate the hair cuticle to improve moisture retention.

Performing this process once a week is sufficient for most curly hair types. Over-conditioning can lead to product buildup and hair that feels limp, so adherence to a schedule is necessary.

  1. Cleanse the hair. Begin with damp hair that has been washed with a mild, clarifying, or moisturizing shampoo. Ensure the hair is free of product residue to allow the conditioner to penetrate the hair cuticle. Gently remove excess water using a microfiber towel so the hair is damp but not dripping.
  2. Apply the product. Section the hair into four manageable parts to ensure even coverage. Apply the deep conditioner starting from the mid-lengths and working down to the ends, where hair is naturally oldest and driest. Use a wide-tooth comb to distribute the product thoroughly through every strand.
  3. Encourage absorption. Gather the hair into a loose bun and cover it with a plastic shower cap. The heat generated under the cap helps the cuticles open slightly, allowing the ingredients to reach the inner cortex of the hair. Leave the mask on for the recommended time, usually 20 minutes, depending on the product label.
  4. Rinse thoroughly. Rinse the hair with cool water to help seal the hair cuticle. Ensure all product is removed, as any residue left on the hair will attract dirt and make the curls look weighed down once they are dry. The hair should feel smooth and slippery, not tacky or heavy.
  5. Dry and style. Gently blot the hair with a microfiber towel to remove excess water. Do not rub the hair, as friction disrupts the curl pattern and causes frizz. Apply your standard styling product while the hair is still damp to lock in the moisture gained during the conditioning process.
Consistency with moisture is the singular requirement for maintaining curly hair health.
