Choosing Between Serum and Oil for Frizz Control

Frizz is essentially the result of hair absorbing moisture from the atmosphere because the cuticle layer is raised. To minimize this, you must determine whether your hair requires hydration from within or a physical barrier to repel external humidity. Serums and oils serve different mechanical roles in this process.

Applying the incorrect product often leads to either heavy, limp hair or a continued lack of control. Understanding the specific function of your product shelf is the first step toward effective management.

  1. Assess hair state when damp. After washing, observe how your hair feels while damp. If it feels brittle or rough, it lacks internal moisture. Apply a water-based serum here to deliver hydration directly into the hair shaft before sealing.
  2. Distribute the serum. Dispense a pea-sized amount of serum into your palms. Rub hands together to warm the product, then press it into the hair strands using a prayer-hands motion. This ensures even distribution without tangling.
  3. Seal with oil post-drying. Once hair is dry or nearly dry, it is time for the oil. Oil is an occlusive, meaning it creates a barrier to stop humidity from entering. Use one to two drops, warmed in your hands, to coat the surface and smooth the cuticle.
  4. Final polish. Use a boar bristle brush or your hands to gently smooth any flyaways at the crown. Do not add more product; use the residual oil left on your palms. This prevents the crown from looking greasy.
Serum delivers the moisture, oil provides the shield.
