A Guide to Co-Washing Frizz-Prone Hair

Co-washing is the practice of using a cleansing conditioner instead of traditional shampoo to remove debris from the scalp. For those with hair prone to frizz, the primary objective is to maintain lipid levels within the hair strand while addressing the accumulation of oil and styling product. By opting for a lower-lather method, you minimize the mechanical disruption of the cuticle, which is often the precursor to visible frizz.

The transition requires adjustment. If your hair feels heavy or limp after two weeks, you are likely using too much product or not rinsing thoroughly enough. Success depends on the tactile response of the hair rather than the presence of foam.

  1. Saturate the hair thoroughly. Begin by soaking your hair under warm water for at least two minutes. Water is the primary solvent here; ensure every layer of your hair is fully drenched before applying the cleanser. Failure to saturate prevents the product from distributing evenly and reaching the scalp.
  2. Apply cleanser to the scalp. Dispense a generous amount of cleansing conditioner into your palms and massage it exclusively into the scalp. Use the pads of your fingers in circular motions to break up sebum and debris. Do not pull the product through the lengths of the hair yet, as this is unnecessary for the cleaning process.
  3. Emulsify with additional water. Add a small amount of water to your scalp and continue massaging. This helps emulsify the oils and product buildup. Spend at least five minutes focusing on the hairline and the nape of the neck, as these areas accumulate the most residue.
  4. Rinse for length. Allow the cleanser to travel down the hair shaft as you rinse it out. Do not scrub the lengths; simply use the water to guide the cleanser over the ends. Ensure the water runs clear, which indicates the product has been successfully removed.
  5. Seal with a cool stream. Finish the rinse with a final blast of cool water. This helps to smooth the hair cuticle and lock in moisture. Gently squeeze excess water out with a microfibre cloth; do not rub or wring the hair, as friction promotes frizz.
The goal of co-washing is to maintain hair hydration without creating a cycle of buildup.
