How to Wear Lavender in Fragrance

Layer lavender with complementary notes and apply to pulse points for a sophisticated scent that works day to evening.

Lavender is having a moment because people finally figured out it doesn't have to smell like your grandmother's soap drawer—when done right, it's actually quite chic.

  1. Choose your lavender base. Start with a lavender-forward fragrance or essential oil blend. Pure lavender can read medicinal, so look for compositions that balance it with other florals, woods, or citrus. Test on skin first—lavender behaves differently on everyone.
  2. Apply to warm zones. Focus on pulse points where your body heat will diffuse the scent naturally. Wrists, behind ears, and the hollow of your throat work best. Skip areas that get friction like inside elbows—lavender bruises easily under pressure.
  3. Layer strategically. Build complexity by pairing with complementary scents. Vanilla or sandalwood underneath adds warmth, while bergamot or lemon on top keeps it fresh. Apply the heaviest note first, then layer lighter ones over it.
  4. Time your application. Lavender peaks about 30 minutes after application, then settles into a softer base. Apply 20 minutes before you want the full effect. For evening wear, add a touch of amber or musk to deepen the composition.
