How to Test Perfume Before You Buy It

Test perfume on your skin, wait thirty minutes for the base notes to develop, then decide.

Most people buy perfume based on the first fifteen seconds, which is like judging a person by their small talk—you're missing the entire personality.

1. Start with clean skin. Test on unscented pulse points—wrists or inner elbows work best. Avoid areas with lotion, oils, or other fragrances that will interfere with the scent. Your skin chemistry is half the equation.
2. Spray, don't rub. One light spray per test spot, then let it settle. Rubbing breaks down the fragrance molecules and changes how the scent develops. Let the perfume do what it's designed to do on its own.
3. Wait for the real story. Give it thirty minutes minimum before making any decisions. Top notes fade fast, middle notes emerge around fifteen minutes, base notes take thirty minutes to show up. The base notes are what you'll smell most of the day.
4. Test only two at once. Your nose gets overwhelmed quickly. Stick to two scents maximum per session, on different arms. If you need a reset between scents, smell coffee beans or step outside for fresh air.
