How to Fix Deeply Cracked Heels

Soak, exfoliate dead skin, apply thick moisturizer, and seal overnight with socks.

Most people attack their feet like they're renovating a house when gentle consistency gets better results than weekend warrior sessions.

  1. Soak to soften. Fill a basin with warm water and soak feet for 15-20 minutes. Add Epsom salt if you have it, but plain water works. This softens the hardened skin so you can actually work with it instead of scraping at concrete.
  2. Remove dead layers. Use a pumice stone or foot file on wet skin, working in one direction. Focus on the thickest areas but don't go aggressive. You want to remove the loose, white dead skin, not create raw patches that will crack worse.
  3. Apply heavy moisturizer. While feet are still damp, apply a thick cream with urea or ceramides. Think ointment consistency, not lotion. The water helps the product penetrate deeper into those stubborn layers.
  4. Seal overnight. Put on cotton socks immediately after moisturizing. This creates a mini greenhouse effect that forces the product deeper and prevents moisture loss while you sleep. Remove socks in the morning.
